Righteous Bandit

Stay out of the lantern light.

1724. His father is dead, and the tax register still asks for the dead man's share. Vược leaves the village — and what follows is a life lived against the register: grain taken from the granary in the rain, a drowning child pulled from the river, and a rebellion that grows larger than anyone meant it to.

The App Store version is available in the United States.

    Lôi Động

Vược is twelve. His father has died, and the house is taxed for the dead man's share as well.

  2. Chapter 21729–1739

    The Fish

On the rivers of Hải Dương the people start calling him Quận He — and his old classmate Nghiêm is sent to take him.

    7 missions
  3. Chapter 31741

    The Righteous Army

In the hills of Chí Linh, Vược joins Kình's righteous army.

    5 missions
  4. Chapter 41743

    Fire Buffalo

The siege of Đồ Sơn and the citadel of Kinh Bắc. The war grows bigger than anyone meant it to.

    7 missions
  5. Chapter 51746

    The Official's Robe

Vược goes to the capital in an official's robe.

Broad daylight: crowds for cover, conversations to overhear, and no killing.

  6. Chapter 61747–1751

    Bird in a Cage

The last years, and the last fight in the rain.

Battles only, ending in a duel with Nghiêm.

    5 missions

The light is where you get caught

Granaries, wharves and garrisons at night. Guards carry lanterns, and their light is what gives you away. Many missions are won without drawing a blade — some say it outright: fighting solves nothing here.

  1. HiddenIn the dark, you are nobody.
  2. Half seenA guard has noticed something. Get out of the light.
  3. SeenThey are alerted, and the whole guard comes after you.
  • Sneak or runA light push on the joystick sneaks; a full push runs, and running makes noise.
  • HideSlip into a jar or another hiding place until the lantern passes.
  • Take and shareTake from the rich, and leave rice at the homes of the poor.
  • Untie and carryCut captives loose and carry them out — or feed the rich man's dog instead of fighting it.

The people

The characters are inspired by real people of 18th-century northern Vietnam.

  • Vược

    Vược

The outlaw the people called Quận He

A village boy from Lôi Động who grows into the bandit the poor protect and the court hunts.

Inspired by Nguyễn Hữu Cầu (1712–1751)

  • Phạm Đình Nghiêm

    Phạm Đình Nghiêm

The classmate sent to take him

He studied beside Vược as a boy, passes the doctoral examination, and is sent to bring him in.

Inspired by Phạm Đình Trọng (1715–1754)

  • Nguyễn Thị Sen

    Nguyễn Thị Sen

    Kình's daughter

She lives in the righteous army's camp at Chí Linh. She can read.

    Inspired by Nguyễn Thị Quỳnh

  • Nguyễn Kình

    Nguyễn Kình

    Leader of the righteous army

He leads the rising in the hills of Chí Linh.

    Inspired by Nguyễn Cừ (?–1741)

The story told in this game is fiction. The people were real.

Who is on watch

Every kind of guard asks something different of you — and some of them never draw a blade at all.

  • Lantern guard

Nods off at his post. No spear, but his lamp still finds you.

  • Village watchman

A villager on patrol, and not a very careful one.

  • Spear soldier

The full garrison soldier, and he fights back.

  • Sabre soldier

Guards the boats and strikes twice in a row.

  • Shield soldier

Blocks ordinary blows. Wait until his shield is open.

  • Musketeer

The first enemy who doesn't need to come close.

  • Scribe

Never fights. He only shouts — and in the capital, being exposed costs you your post.

  • Squad leader

Sets the pace of the big battles, and his red-lit strikes can only be dodged.

When it comes to steel

  • TapStrike.
  • HoldBlock — it costs stamina.
  • Swipe sidewaysDodge. A white flash can be blocked; a red one can only be dodged.
  • Swipe upFinish a guard who is down.

How it plays

Stealth first

Know how exposed you are at every moment, from Hidden to Seen, and use the dark, the crowds and the hiding places.

Steel when it comes to it

Tap to strike, hold to block, swipe to dodge. Some foes parry everything: strike only when they glow.

A story between every heist

Short illustrated scenes carry the story from mission to mission, and you can return to any scene you have reached from the Scenes menu.

Side tales

Twelve optional missions — a ghost boat, a blind ferryman, a fish seller — that you can play or skip.

No. The whole game plays offline; without a connection it simply shows no ads.
